TIRUCHI: “We need to empower ourselves with a sense of purpose and knowledge with righteousness at heart and imbibe the strength from the lives of many indomitable human beings, whether they are from science or arts or public service or any other field to make the development inclusive and sustainable in a democratic setup, said former President A. P. J. Abdul Kalam here on Monday.

Addressing the silver jubilee special function of the Cauvery College for Women belonging to Reddy Educational Trust, on ‘Empowering the young for sustainable development’, Dr. Kalam said that development of the nation required development of States, villages and individuals.

The former President pointed out that the college education for the students was not just a period that became history but provided an empowerment to meet the challenges of life. Similarly, the teachers are not just teaching the students but educating them for life with an empowerment of knowledge with a value system.

Dr. Kalam said that there were four proven steps viz., having an aim in the life before 20 years of age, acquiring knowledge continuously, hard work towards the aim and perseverance to defeat the problem to get achievement in life. There are three sources – mother, father and teacher. Teacher is the most important of the three, particularly primary school teacher.

Dr. Kalam said that a dynamic college should have eight characteristics _ radiating greatness by the teaching capacity, learning environment with library, internet, e-learning and creative laboratories, the team spirit of students, promoting best in learning all round to all the students, teachers becoming role models, capacity to teach all students to succeed, and generating creativity among all students.

Talking about the integrated action for developed India, Dr. Kalam said that five areas – agriculture and food processing, education and health care, information and communication technology, reliable and quality electric power, surface transport and infrastructure, self-reliance in critical technologies _ were identified where the country had a core competence. These areas are closely inter-related and if progressed in a coordinated way, will lead to food, economic and national security.
